They learn how to identify livestock, understand basic reproductive aspects, learn how to prepare soil and properly plant seeds, and understand the basics of germination.
8th Grade Rotation – The groups of 8th graders go over the information about the National FFA Organization and also cover Ag. Mechanics. They get the opportunity to learn the history of the FFA, learn the Creed, participate in a Chapter meeting, and complete the application for their discovery degrees. During the Ag Mech portion they learn shop safety, the basics or stick welding, and they get to work in the shop and weld beads.
Ag Mech. 2 – These students started out working on Gas Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) also known as MIG welding. They went through the safety and basics of MIG welding and have had to complete different types of weld joints. Once they were comfortable using the welder they picked up and completed MANY different projects that were used as centerpieces for the SLLC (FFA) Conference and the FFA banquet this year. These centerpieces consisted of flowers made out of silverware, tractors, trucks, and horseshoes projects. They are currently working on moving the welding cabinet so we can start on an FFA wall project, once they finish that they will finish out the year with an electrical unit. They will learn how to wire basic switches, receptacles, and lights.
Ag Mech. 3 – This group of juniors and seniors started out the year working on TIG welding. They have worked to complete the different weld joints on the weld sheets. They have currently been working on job ready skills, resume building, and mock interviews. They will finish out the year with a concrete masonry unit and will learn the basics of constructing a block wall, and how to calculate for blocks as well as concrete.
Animal Systems – These students have been working on a poultry unit and are about to finish it up, they will be conducting labs on egg shell strength, egg freshness, and parts of the egg. Once they finish this unit they will complete a digestive unit and learn about the different types of digestive tracks. They will complete poster projects based on the digestive tracks they choose.
Plant Systems These students started out the year doing some research on the Strawberry patch needs and did some soil tests to determine a possible new location for the patch. They have done some germination projects and we are currently working with Penn State Extension to conduct research on the Black Cutworm Moth. This research will be ongoing through the end of the year. As soon as the weather breaks again we will be completing the strawberry patch project and actually move the berry patch from its current location.
WC&NR – These students have completed the maple syrup unit and made over 2 gallons of syrup this year. We were able to use the life skills room to boil sap so we did not end up having to dump any this year. With the additional syrup we made maple peanuts and almonds, the maple peanuts were packaged and used as appetizers at the FFA banquet. They are now working hard to get ready for the Envirothon which will be on Thursday May 5th. Once the Envirothon is completed, we will move on to the timber sports unit and the students will have the opportunity to work in the woods, learn how to use the axes and saws, and understand the different timber sports events.

8th Grade Rotation – The second set of 8th graders are getting towards the end of their marking period. They did a great job with the FFA portion as well as the animal science aspect. They had the opportunity to discuss crop production sets and tools as well. They will be finishing up the plant science unit and moving on to the Ag Mechanics portion very soon.
Ag Mech. 1 – These students have just completed the welding portion of the class and are moving on to small gas engines. All students completed the first weld sheet that has them do basic weld joints using a 6013 electrode. Once they completed the weld sheet, they had to come up with a creative project. The creative projects were outstanding this year. Some of the highlights include a crab that was made by Harlie Wenrich, a fish skeleton made by Derek Thorne, a hat rack made by Nick Jeffers, a tractor built by Tanner Hess, and other projects including snails, coat racks, boot jacks, name plates, initials, and many more. These students did an amazing job on their creative welding projects!
Animal Systems – We just finished up the rabbit unit and we now have a classroom pet. Bugzy the Harlequin Rhinelander crass joined up about a month ago and the students were broken into groups of 3 and assigned a week that they have to take care of her. This involved cleaning her cage, feeding and watering her, as well as checking her to make sure she is healthy and happy. We are now beginning the Dairy Science portion of the course and students will learn about all aspects of the dairy industry along with having the opportunity to explore the dairy feeds CDE which involved understanding and taste testing various dairy products.
Plant Systems – These students have been working diligently on a hydroponics unit. This unit emphasized different types of hydroponics systems. Once we finished going over the different types of systems, the students got to choose the system they were most interested in, design their own system, and build that system. We are very close to having these systems completed and working. They have had several attempts at getting the systems running but they are trial and error runs and they have altered the systems to make them run smoothly. They have designed the systems for certain types of plants, and they are excited to start the growing process.
WC&NR – The WC&NR has just completed a wildlife unit where they had to create a project (Powerpoint, poster, video, etc.) on an animal of their choice. They researched the animal and created their project to present that animal to the rest of the class. We also went over different types of wildlife signs and how to ID animals. They learned how to ID wildlife skulls, tracks, pelts, and learned basic information about many PA common wildlife. They are now moving on to PA birds, where they will be identifying birds by sight and calls.
FFA – The Headwaters FFA now has a Keystone wall that Gabby Thompson-Brower has worked on for her senior project. This wall showcases over 150 students over the past 60 years who have received their State Keystone Degrees. Gabby is not completely done with this project, but she has completed up until 2000.
