Enrichment Report- Mrs. Vonda Reed
Let's talk gifts, instead of the 12 Days of Christmas, how about the 4 months of school?
September, first gifts - A great group of seven, 4th-6th grade enrichment students.
13-fourth and fifth grade Chinese students taught by Mrs. Lui
12- third through 6th grade Spanish students taught by Mrs. Slawson
8- third through 6th grade French students taught by me.
October, second gifts - A Gifted Consortium field trip to Rock City Park in Olean, NY. The enrichment class traveled to Rock City on a beautiful day. We saw a video on the history of the park. A Shinglehouse science teacher talked on the formation of the rocks, and we hiked around the park. We did not give up until we found every single formation.
Our school sent 5 sixth grade students to Floyd C. Fretz Middle School in Bradford, PA on October 18th to compete in the piThon. We did not place, but we were challenged and humbled in a beneficial way.
November, third gifts - November 13th, 9 students traveled to Bradford, PA for the Fall Books Challenge. All 9 students had read at least 10 books from the assigned lists. They had each written 10 study questions for each book they read. (All 4th - 6th grade students in the Children's School had been invited and encouraged to participate.)
We had a 6th grade junior high team, "Reed's Readers". These 4 students competed in the 6th through 8th grade division and came in 6th place out of 11 teams. Some of those teams had 12 people on them and they had enough people to have read all the books on the list! I am very proud of this team.
The C.S.Literates team had 5 students in grades 4 and 5. They did not go down without a fight. Again, they were up against 12 member teams with alternates! This team came in 9th out of 12 teams. This is a very structured, challenging, and fun competition and several students are already reading and turning in cards for the Spring Books Challenge on March 6, 2014.
December, fourth gifts - December 11th, Invention Convention in Johnsonburg, PA. The enrichment class studied some deliberate and some unintentional inventions. Each student was given the task of coming up with an invention or innovation that would help their world. We took our Sparkle Remover, Velcro shirt, and Page Keeper and displayed them at the convention. All inventions were displayed in the gym and the inventors were given time to present as spectators walked by their work. There were at least 50 inventions. Students had also researched inventors and we could see their projects. There was also an "egg drop" team building and problem solving activity. It was an enlightening day!
We have been very busy and we are looking forward to a great 2014! Thank you for providing all these great gifts for our students!
