Library News by Mrs. Amanda Butler
The library is a constant whirlwind of activity throughout the school day. It seems to be the one place everyone in the building comes to for information and guidance, young or old.
I am pleased to announce that the staff of the Northern Lights yearbook received the prestigious National Yearbook Program of Excellence for the 2015-2016 yearbook. This is the third year in a row the Northern Lights yearbook has received this outstanding distinction. The staff worked diligently and cooperatively to create a yearbook that is beyond compare. The addition of a custom designed cover has made the 2015-2016 Northern Lights yearbook an outstanding representation of our student body. Mr. Burdick and I will be taking another group to Jostens in State College on May 9th to design our yearbook cover for the 2016-2017 Northern Lights yearbook. It is an exciting time to be part of the yearbook staff.
The Library Science students are currently constructing hoax websites for class. The students learned the characteristics of a reliable website. We also discussed bias when viewing several of the news sources. The students were guided to websites that were specifically designed by college students as hoax sites. They could not believe how convincing those sites were and how easily fooled they could become if they did not pay attention to the sites they were browsing. The students, finally, were set up with a Google Site and given a rubric to create their own hoax site. They are having a good time struggling and creating this site to share with me.

The Library is always a flurry of activity throughout the school day! It truly is a hub of activity in the High School. Whether it is seniors getting books for their English class, seniors working on their Senior Project presentations and papers, citation help all throughout the school, juniors in their Health class researching First Aid and creating presentations for their classmates, sophomores in Library Science creating hoax websites and learning correct citation guidelines, or any other surprise requests that tend stroll through the door at any given time.
The Media Communications class is diligently working on creating the video for the Senior Parents Appreciation Night on March 10, 2016. They are also trying to sell our yearbook to students and parents. We are in need of some more sales to receive the Excellence Award from Jostens for the third year in a row.

The Northern Potter Middle and High School Library is always a center of activity but this year it has been ramped up markedly due to the classes that are currently being taught in the Library. It has made the Library filled with students almost every period of the day. This is a great aspect to the Library for the 2015-2016 school year.
Media Communications is now being taught in the Library for two period per day. The students are currently working in Photoshop, and designing layouts for the 2016 yearbook in Yearbook Avenue. The first deadline is approaching soon, and the Media Communications classes are well on the way to meet and surpass that deadline. The uniqueness of this class for the 2015-2016 is such that we have a very large amount of students taking the class in seats and independent study. The students are enjoying and learning at a phenomenal rate.
The Library Science students are currently exploring all aspects of their Google accounts and many of the Google suite of apps. They will, upon completion, have a very fluid working knowledge of the amazing aspects of their Google account and how it will benefit them throughout their high school career. This is fundamental for their future endeavors, as well.
Due to the Library being so busy with classes and activity, it is sometimes difficult for students to find time to come to the Library to check out a book. To aid in this situation, I created a website with a link through a QR code for all students to access with their student device and check out a book. I will actually take the book to the requesting student in their first period class. This new aspect to the Library services has been met with success. This is just another way the needs of the students are met on a daily basis.

The library is a bustling nerve center for the school district during every school day, and this has never been more evident than it was during the 2014-2015 school year. The students utilized the resources housed within the four walls of the library on a continual basis all school year long. Research projects, senior projects, casual reading, assigned reading, computer usage, and everything in between has had its place in the library.
We were saddened at the new of the loss of alumni Gary Briggs and his wife. His estate bequeathed a donation to the library in his and his wife Mary’s memory. The library will be purchasing some nonfiction science reference books in their memory. Donations such as these help the library accentuate the resources we currently have for our students. The library has received donations in the past from the Ulysses Order of the Eastern Star and various graduating classes. All donations are greatly appreciated and used for the expressed requests of the donor.
The morning announcement crew will be bidding a fond farewell to seniors Corrie Mace and Mandy Slawson. They have been a wonderful part of our announcement crew for the past two years and will be greatly missed. Taking their place for the 2015-2016 school year will be Tory McCutcheon, Gracie Hamilton, and Megan Empson. We now have eleven different students reading the morning announcements throughout the school year. Their dedication to the crew and school makes each morning an upbeat experience to all to hear their voices.
A positive story to end the school year, our students feel the Library is truly “their place.” More often than not, students who take out and return books will offer to re-shelve the books they are returning. This shows how the students understand, care, and want to keep their library in great condition. Students show their respect for the library and its contents by these selfless acts. These actions should make us all proud of our Northern Potter students.

The library is always a hub of activity during the school day, and during the winter months, the activity seems to ratchet up some. Everyone loves curling up with a great book which resides in our stacks on a daily basis. The library receives eight new books per month across varying genres through a subscription to the Junior Library Guild. These are the newest titles to come on the shelves for the students. This is a departure from other years when all books were purchased during the summer for the new year. Now, we have fresh, new books on a monthly basis. The students seem to really enjoy this change.
Students often have a Barnes and Noble experience while in the library. They find a book and curl up in a comfy chair to try it out for a few minutes before they make the move to check it out or try another book that has caught their attention. As the librarian, it is a great time to talk to the students about their favorite genres of writing so that the library funds can purchase materials to meet their needs. We service almost a quarter of the students in a school day, so needless to say, it never is too quiet in the library.
The library also is the hub for the morning announcements. We currently have 10 different students across every grade level being the morning “welcome committee” for the student body on a daily basis. The teachers and students like hearing the announcements from a student and often have a game of “name that student” going on in their classroom. The morning announcement crew grows every year, and we always welcome new voices.
Many teachers utilize the library for their classroom research projects. I recently finished a differentiated supervision unit with Mr. Haskins and Mr. Burdick which revolves around the American Revolution. The students came to the library to utilize the online card catalog and Power Library databases for reference sources for a writing/creative project on an American Revolution VIP, battle, or act/law passed as a result of the Revolution activities. The students enjoyed their time researching and finding great information to complete their project. This experience gave the 8th grade students a wonderful hands-on experience in the library, which they will carry with them as they progress through the junior senior high school building.
November 2014
The start to the school year has seen a flurry of activity swirling in the Library. Students from all grade levels have been in and out checking out the new acquisitions to the Library for this school year, learning how to check their grades in the new gradebook program and working on their Senior Projects. There is never a dull moment in “the room with all of the books.”
The first rotation of Library Science 10 has been successfully concluded with some stellar Prezi presentations about their potential future career choice. Mr. Kevin Roessner spent a period with the class exploring their interests and aptitudes for their lives after they graduate from Northern Potter. The career component to Library Science has replaced the Senior Project research element due to a change in the formal Senior Project for the Sophomores and beyond. It has been a good move. It enables students to begin thinking to their future and gives Mr. Roessner time to touch base with the students in their Sophomore year.
Many teachers and their classes have made the voyage to the Library to outfit their classes with novels and nonfiction books for their classes and independent reading assignments. Classes have been taking Accelerated Reader tests and researching famous characters from the Wild West era of American History. On average, the library hosts 70 students a day for a myriad of assignments and a quiet refuge from the everyday activities in the building.
