Physical Education News by Mr. Paul Burdick
The Physical Education classes will begin a two week unit on Archery on April 4th. It has been interesting to see how much improvement the students have made since we instituted the NASP program. They are destroying the bulls-eye area on the targets much faster now! We are looking forward to getting outside for our activities as the mild winter has enabled the fields to dry quickly.
Physical Education/Health News by Mrs. Dawn Bieser
The new semester has begun with all new classes in the gym. We started the semester off with basketball. We are hoping for some snow to get out and cross country ski, too. The health classes are discussing decision making and time management.
The seniors are working hard raising funds for their class trip in May. We are currently selling Zappa Snacks and discount cards are on the agenda within the next month. The next class trip payment is due Feb. 5th.
Mr. Paul Burdick ~ Physical Education News
The Physical Education classes are finishing a unit on volleyball this week and will be completing the first round of the Fitnessgram fitness tests next week. We are hoping for some snow in order to teach our cross country skiing unit before the students change classes. We will be seeing all new students the second semester in the High School.

The physical education department wrapped up the school year with our soccer and softball outdoor units.
The health classes were discussing communicable diseases and community safety. We had a lot of great class discussions about emergency procedures in events like choking, fire in the home, and how to deal with summer activity accidents.

The boys and girls physical education classes wrapped up the first semester with basketball and began the new semester with a combination of basketball and cross country skiing. The senior high students have the option to ski or snowshoe. We are working on the basics of turning and stopping with 7th and 8th graders. When the classes are playing basketball, the senior high students have the option to play "half court" games or "knock out" (a shooting game). Junior high students are working on basic skills like dribbling, ball handling, passing and shooting.
The 9th and 11th grade health classes are starting out the new semester discussing decision making, careers, and the three important aspects of the health pyramid (emotional, physical and social).
The team sports I-period students seem to be having a great time playing tournament games of "mad mat ball,” which is a creative version of kick ball with no baseball rules. The students can just keep running the bases.
December 2014
The physical education classes are finishing up a volleyball unit with a team tournament and are preparing for the arrival of snow in order to begin a cross country ski and snow shoeing unit. Both the 9th and 11th grade health classes are covering lessons on substance abuse. Soon after Christmas break, the classes will change for the semester and each class will be filled with new students.
October 2014
The Classroom Diagnostic Tool (CDT) baseline testing is complete. Students in algebra iPeriod have analyzed their CDT results. Now they are using this data to prioritize their areas of need to prepare for the Keystone testing in December. We are using the Study Island program to practice these concepts. Each day when students enter the classroom they pick up their Samsung Galaxy 2 tablets and log in to Study Island. Mrs. LaBarron then provides a mini lesson on a needed topic and students begin practicing the concept in Study Island. Once they have “earned a ribbon,” they begin working on other areas of need. At this time, Mrs. LaBarron and Mrs. Woolgar provide individualized support to students.
This school year is off to a great start! Math 7 students just finished a unit on integers and algebraic expressions. Next, we will begin working on ratios and proportional reasoning. The college in high school calculus class just started the differentiation unit. In this unit, they are learning how a derivative can be used to find rates of change. We will soon begin using Mathematica software to complete labs that will allow students to make connections and solve complex problems. Algebra 1B students just finished a review unit on graphing linear functions. They are now working on writing linear equations to solve real-world problems. As usual, the math department is working hard to prepare our students for PSSAs, Keystones, and future course work.
September 2014
The physical education classes are just finishing the Fitnessgram diagnostic tests and will be starting a soccer unit in the beginning of May.
Mr. Burdick's Health 11 class and Mrs. Bieser's Health 9 classes are studying a substance abuse unit consisting of drugs, alcohol, and tobacco.

April News
The physical education classes are starting their roller-blading unit.
Students were taught how to propel themselves and stop appropriately.
They were also shown how to properly equip themselves using helmets, pads,
and inline skates. Careful attention was given to planning instruction
that matches each student’s ability level. While some students were able
to stand on their wheels immediately, others used the gymnasium wall and even
the rolling equipment cart to attain balance in the beginning. Lots of
improvement can be seen from the younger students and even from some of the
older students who are a little hesitant to be on wheels!
Both the grade 9 and grade 11 health classes are working on the body systems;
these include the skeletal, muscular, nervous, excretory, respiratory,
digestion, and circulatory systems.
March News
Mr. Burdick's 11th grade health class is studying physical conditioning. Students are analyzing the differences between aerobic and anaerobic training and learning how to design a fitness program that meets their individual needs.
Both Mrs. Bieser and Mr. Burdick are working on a volleyball unit in physical education classes as well as mixing in some cross-country skiing and snowshoeing when the weather cooperates.
Mrs. Bieser's 9th grade health class is working on a nutrition unit.
February News
In the month of January, the physical education department wrapped up the semester with the Fitness gram tests. Abbie Anderson, Tory McCutcheon, Ellen Kibbe, and Mandy Slawson all achieved their goals in all five fitness zones (endurance, flexibility, upper body strength, abdominal strength, and back flexibility). Also, we were able to get in a few days of skiing/snow shoeing before Christmas break.
The 9th grade health class finished the semester discussing personal/community safety while the 11th grade health class wrapped up the semester with studying non-communicable diseases.
January News
The physical education classes are taking advantage of the fresh snow that fell in December and are beginning a unit on cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. The 7th and 8th grade classes will be working on the basics of the diagonal stride, turning, and snowplowing before experiencing the trails.
The “Fitnessgram” tests will be given before the end of the semester and a new group of students will be taking physical education.
Both Mrs. Bieser and Mr. Burdick are covering a substance abuse unit in the 9th and 11th grade health classes.
