News from the School Counselor

There might be three feet of snow outside, but the temperature in the counseling office is beginning to heat up. After numerous attempts, the 9th grade students traveled to the Seneca Highlands Career and Technical Center on Monday, February 23 to participate in a tour of the facility. Mr. Jim Young and Mrs. Risha Johnson provided detailed information about the various programs offered at the CTC.
On February 24-25, Mr. Drabert, Mr. Roessner, and Mrs. Debbie Morgan accompanied Dylan Foust and Sarah Morgan on a tour of several western Pennsylvania colleges, universities, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) field office in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Mr. Drabert was instrumental in arranging this opportunity for the students through the Vocational Youth Mentoring Program, which is sponsored by Potter County Human Services. Dylan is interesting in pursuing a career in the intelligence/counter-terrorism field. He had the opportunity to speak with a former FBI Regional director and a current FBI special agent to discuss opportunities and requirements. Sarah would like to pursue a career as an Anesthesiologist. She was able to meet with several professors at Gannon University, Mercyhurst University, and the University of Pittsburgh. Pending funding from the county, we hope to offer this program to more students in the future.
On March 3, 85 10th and 11th-grade students traveled to Corning Community College for a tour of the campus and an informational session. Admissions representatives lead a discussion on college selection, degree offerings, and dual enrollment opportunities. Having recently been renovated, the campus is poised to offer many opportunities to our students. We are looking to increase our dual enrollment opportunities with them in an effort to complement the courses we already offer through the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford.
Course selections have begun for the 2015-2016 school year. Mr. Roessner and Mr. Eglesia will be designing the schedule over the coming weeks with schedules set to be released to students prior to the close of the 2014-2015 school year. Local scholarship packets have also been distributed to all senior class members. Included in the packet is a letter that details the application procedure along with an offer from Mr. Roessner to help students complete the applications. These work sessions will take place during iPeriods.
Finally, Mr. Roessner has been working collaboratively with Mr. Bob Wicker of the Potter County Education Council to develop a county-wide job fair for juniors and seniors. Northern Potter will host this event on Wednesday, May 6. The focus of this event will be to provide opportunities for students who wish to enter the job market upon graduating and provide seasonal (summer) employment opportunities to students. We hope to make this a yearly event.

As we approach the halfway point of the school year, I would like to highlight several activities that have taken place as well as preview several events that will occur in the latter part of the year.
I had the opportunity to attend the Pennsylvania Department of Education’s Integrated Learning Conference. This three-day event was held at the Penn Stater Conference Center, November 5-7, 2014. Aside from valuable networking opportunities, I was able to attend numerous sessions that focused on preparing our students for the world after graduation. A high percentage of the presentations provided attainable, solution-focused concepts to help ease the transition for our students. I am anxious to implement several of these strategies within our evolving curriculum.
I accompanied eight of our Health Assistant-CTC students to Wellsboro Area High School on Thursday, November 13th as they participated in the annual Tioga County Health Career Fair. This event provided our students with the opportunity to speak with representatives of local health care systems, post-secondary schools, and health care employers to ascertain educational requirements and job qualifications for careers in the health care field. This opportunity occurred at an optimum time, as the students were preparing to begin their clinical field experiences.
On Friday, November 14th, I found myself traveling in the opposite direction, as I attended the PHEAA Financial Aid Workshop for school counselors on the campus of the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford. The world of financial aid for post-secondary education is ever-changing. This informative, day-long session provided me with an in-depth understanding of the financial aid process. I was also able to obtain access to various career planning and development websites.
The Winter Keystone testing period has begun. Students who took the Keystone exams last school year and did not receive a proficient rating were afforded the opportunity to retake those exams again. The Algebra exam was administered on December 3rd and 4th. The Literature exam was given on December 9th and 10th. The Biology exam will be given on January 7th and 8th. The testing has gone very smoothly, thus far, with an extremely high attendance rate (98%).
Plans are being formulated to host a Financial Aid Night and College Dual Enrollment information session mid to late January. More information will be forthcoming. In addition, dates are being finalized for our 9th-grade students to tour the Seneca Highlands Career and Technical Center.
September 2014
The counseling office is in full swing as we begin our third week of school. I would like to highlight several activities that have already occurred and preview some additional opportunities that will be taking place.
Thirty-four students have enrolled in various programs at the Seneca Highlands Career and Technical Center. Three of these students are taking advantage of the new welding program. We also have three students utilizing the CTC’s cooperative education program.
We have seen a dramatic increase in student interest regarding dual enrollment course offerings. Through a cooperative effort between the University of Pittsburgh-Bradford and Corning Community College, students are able to earn college credits that can be transferred to college upon graduating from high school. We have several students this year that will have earned between 12 and 24 college credits.
There has also been an increase in enrollment for our blended/online course offerings. Currently, we have approximately 40 students utilizing the program. In addition to credit recovery, there is a large percentage of students taking courses to accelerate and enrich their educational experience.
The vast majority of schedule changes were completed within the first four days of school. There are minor changes yet to be made, but these will be completed in the upcoming week. The attention will then turn to meeting with twelfth-grade students to ensure they are on track to graduate. After the initial consultation, future checks will occur at the end of each marking period for all grade levels.
Our students are living in an exciting time, with an increasingly diverse and mobile society, new technologies, and expanding opportunities. To help ensure that they are prepared to become the next generation of parents, workers, leaders, and citizens, every student needs support, guidance, and opportunities during adolescence, a time of rapid growth and change. Adolescents face unique and diverse challenges, both personally and developmentally, that impact academic achievement. As the school counselor, I look forward to promoting the academic, personal and social development of our students.
The counseling office has been very busy during the fall season. Our students participated in numerous activities that helped to enhance their academic, career, and social/emotional development. Several highlights include:
- College visits: Representatives from the following colleges and universities have visited our school and have met with approximately 35 juniors and seniors.
Clarion University, Lock Haven University, Mansfield University, Alfred State College, Saint Bonaventure University, California University of Pennsylvania, Penn State-DuBois.
- October 15: 11th grade students participated in Alfred State College’s annual high school visitation day. Students had the opportunity to tour the campus and spend several hours in classrooms and shops. Professors and college students were on hand to answer questions and provide insight into the school’s opportunities.
- October 29: I had the opportunity to meet with the director of admissions at Alfred University to discuss ways to engage our students with the university. I look forward to continued discussion and possibly having several faculty members visit Northern Potter to offer some “guest lecture” series. While on campus, I had the opportunity to tour their world-renowned ceramics department.
- October 30: I attended the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency’s (PHEAA) annual school counselor financial aid update meeting at Lycoming College. Regional Director, Marla Kane, gave a very detailed and thorough overview of the financial aid process and provided numerous updates that take effect this year. This information will be shared at a “Financial Aid Night” that we are providing on December 8th and 10th.
- November 3rd through 6th: Mrs. Butler and I traveled to State College, PA and attended the 24th-annual Conference on Integrated Learning. Sponsored by the PA Department of Education, this event seeks to identify the connection between school and career. There were numerous networking and informational sessions that we took advantage of. Of particular interest was information concerning career portfolios. We are planning to implement some of the information with our current eighth-grade class at the beginning of the 2016-2017 school year. It was affirming to hear and see the successes and struggles of other school districts from across the state. We were also able to obtain information that will assist us in further development of our comprehensive school counseling program.
- Winter Keystone Exams: 46 students have finished retaking the exams. We scheduled the exams to be administered prior to the holiday vacation. This also allows students to focus solely on midterm exams upon returning from vacation.
Upon returning from the holiday vacation, the 9th-grade students will be touring the Seneca Highlands Career and Technical Center on Thursday, January 7th. They will have the opportunity to speak with the director and observe each vocational shop. Finally, Northern Potter, in collaboration with the Potter County Education Council, will be hosting the 2nd-annual Northern Tier Job Fair on Thursday, April 7th.
